LIVE Update 12: Wednesday, June 20, 2008

Thursday Morning - We are almost done!!

23:41, June 19, 2008 - Zeke and I are in Sao Paulo waiting for a plane to arrive that is late making the connection.  We left yesterday morning and flew to Belem where we had a 14 hour layover.  We decided to go into Belem and I played tour guide showing Zeke many of some of the places the team had seen (the Zhogabe Apart Hotel where we stayed, the avenue shops, the fish market, the mall, the River Docks expansion, and some side streets.  We bought a few souvenirs and walked for miles in the pouring rain!!  We bought a shirt (so that we would be dressed ok for dinner).  We both handed out our testimonies about everywhere we went.

Zeke noted that if we handed these out in the U.S., we’d see a lot of them being ignored or just thrown away but not so here!  They all read them almost immediately.  We made friends with many along the path home.  We arrived in New York late and rushed to get through to the connecting flight to Columbus.  The plane was full so I didn’t get to ride the final leg with Zeke.  Jeff, Christa, Landon, Carole, Andrew and Wade were at the airport to meet them.  I will arrive home in the morning just before noon and the “Tam 8” will arrive Saturday evening (everyone is welcome to greet them at the airport if you wish).

The team will have more stories to tell and we’ll all be sharing some incredible miracles a week from Sunday (with another carry in dinner, too).

You have been a vital part of this mission and may the Lord receive ALL the praise!  God bless and see you this Sunday!

Love you,

- Pastor Steve

LIVE Update 11: Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Monday's Summary - A lot of rain, but the important mission continues

19:48, June 17, 2008 - Greetings from Brazil!

I couldn’t get back on line in Porto de Moz because of constant storms and the electric was out all day Sunday in our neighborhood (about half of the town).  I told you about kids camp and Sunday night was great!  I spoke at Richie’s church and Donnell shared his testimony.  I’ve heard Donnell now three time and this was the best yet!  Marcie spoke at Clyde’s church and Tina gave her testimony and I heard it was wonderful, too!

On Monday, we woke to another storm – it has rained every day and all day on some (we are certainly in the rain forest but the rainy season is supposed to be over!)  We then toured the Thirst Relief Water Filter project and the new offices.  We were supposed to work at both but were rained out.  Eric got some work in since he had already had the tour.  The afternoon was filled with packing to come back to Altamira and some of the team went swimming (yes it rained there too).  We had our closing time with Richie and debriefed the mission.  It was exciting to hear all the wonderful testimonies (and you’ll get to hear them on the 2nd Sunday after returning).  We then loaded a flatbed truck (at 9 PM) and boarded the boat so that we could have an early start for Altamira (a 10 hour boat trip down river – Xingu).

It was a rough night sleeping with lots of interesting noises (being so close to the village) and then a MAJOR storm hit at 6:05 AM which delayed out exit a bit – but the trip down here was great.  We watched a movie on the boat (that’s a first!), played cards, stopped for a swim, talked, prayed, ate and watched the incredible sights of the Amazon basin!  We arrived at Port Victoria around 6:30 PM and then were unloading here in Altamira around 7:45 PM.  We will have devotions, debrief and will turn in.  Zeke and I will be heading to the airport in the morning for our trip home and the rest of the team will continue the mission until Friday morning.  Pray our travels are less eventful that the trip down!!  Pray for the team’s continued mission.  Pray for Eric’s legs, Marcie’s knee, and everyone else is great!

God has been present at every step of this mission but we are all a bit weary and ready for home!  Give our best to everyone and we’ll see you Sunday!

LIVE Update 10: Sunday, June 15, 2008

A traditional funeral, Father's Day celebration, and chains from addiction broken!

09:16, June 15, 2008 - Bon Dia from Brasil!

Paz (Peade) is how everyone greets each other as they enter church.  You are in worship right now and I'm in Kid's Camp!  We have worship on Sunday evenings all over Brasil (and yes, I am spelling Brasil correctly -- Brazilian style).

Ben shared his heart last night and Zeke gave an incredible message!  the place was full.  the Church's dance team shared a song involvind the cross which was excellent (tell Tracie that i have it on video).

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!  They celebrate Father's Day in August here so have a donut for me, too!  I went to a "wake" here last night with Richie.  They lay the body on the kitchen table and place lots of flowers on it (no embalming) and gather for mourning.  No funeral service and they are required to get the body into the ground within 24 hours (but the government is not strict with this.  The lady was 94 years old and was the mother of Jesus' wife (who I've told you about from previous trips).  I took a picture and printed it for them and I'll share it with you when I get home.

The team is pooling their funds to help a young couple get corrective shoes for their 2 month old baby whose feet are turned in.  The same happened to the mother and they did surgery that made her feet MUCH, MUCH worse and she does not want her baby going through life the way she has to.  She walks on the top of her feet they are so badly turned.  She is a beautiful young lady, though.  Pray for them.

We are going OUT to eat for lunch in honor of Father's day and will have worship tonight in both Porto de Moz churches.  Pray for Marcie as she preaches for the first time!  Tina and possible Zeke or Eric will be sharing their testimony (unsure right now).  Hot here today and pray for Marcie whose knee is causing her some problems today.  Pray for Cassie whose tummy is still upset.

PRAISE:  Marcie is going through a wonderful breakthrough and Tracey has NOT had a cigarette since leaving the U.S. and she has not had a patch for a week!  She's not even biting anyone's head off but giving God the PRAISE for the VICTORY!

Love to all!

LIVE Update 9: Sunday, June 15, 2008

Summary for Saturday - Today was filled with laughter of innocent curious children!

17:46, June 14, 2008It's hard to believe that it is Saturday and we'll be heading back to Altamira this next Tuesday!  Zeke and I will board a plane on Wednesday Morning and the team will continue the mission and do some shopping before getting on the plane next Friday.  I seem to have a good connection right now and praying that it will hold for this update!

I arose early this morning for a shot of the sunrise -- everyone else slept in (catching up from our river mission).  I have not had a good sunrise or sunset because it has rained and rained and has been constantly overcast.  The same this morning!  I walked towards the beach reading my Bible and Proverbs 14:14 hit me strongly.  Being satisfied!  Check it out.

We had our first kids camp this morning and it was wonderful.  Everyone commented on the tremendous work Carole had done in organizing it and the missionaries want her to write a manual for all teams who come!  We had about 81 kids, 17 Brazilian youths who helped, the missionaries and the team (of course).  These children are beautiful.  Their innocence, their excitement, their curiosity -- everything.  Tracey asked how many wanted to accept Jesus into their hearts and arms went up everywhere!  Christie led them in the prayer of repentance and off they went.  Everyone worked hard but are excited to do it again tomorrow!

We had a great lunch, an afternoon break, devotions led by Ben, went swimming and are now getting ready for the evening Youth Rally.  Zeke will be preaching and Ben will be sharing his testimony and the team will be there for ministry.  We plan to grab some ice cream afterwards (a unique experience here) and head to our respective homes for the mission.  Again, we feel blessed to be here and yet a tinge of home-sickness, too!  Do go to church tomorrow and keep the home lights burning!  Pray for Cassie -- touch of a stomach bug but ok.  Love you all!!!!  Tell Josh I'm prayingfor him (and of course Paul, the team, the workers, everyone!!) See you so soon!

LIVE Update 8: Saturday, June 14, 2008

A heartwarming Brazil welcomed us and His Everlasting Love with open arms...

22:56, June 13, 2008 - Having unsuccessfully tried multiple times, I am now writing attempting again to update you on our
river mission.  We successfully landed in Porto de Moz this afternoon and the whole team is fairing  well.  A couple of them have already checked into the web site and the stories/experiences they are having abound!

God has carried us from Villa Mendoza where we shared a huge community meal, taught English classes, worshiped, led children's ministry and did street evangelism (more like jungle path evangelism).  I preached at the evening worship and Tracey shared her testimony.  Our worship team included missionaries, Brazilians, and Zeke and Ben!  The response was beautiful.  We then traveled to a new site, Maparacaia where we watched Ben come alive playing with the kids and some of the team (Randy, Zeke, Donnell, and Cassie) playing volleyball with the older youth.  We did a jungle walk to a nearby village and our first contacts into this community were very rewarding.  Randy shared his testimony and Zeke gave a wonderful message and the whole team jumped in for ministry.  Marcie, Cassie, Tracey and missionaries worked with the kids and 13 raised their hands to invite Jesus into their hearts!

The next morning we gave them three of the Thirst Relief Water filters and Clyde (one of the missionaries) met with the leaders for some serious evangelism.  We walked along swamps and kept our eyes open for snakes.  We did encounter water buffalo!  We then traveled to Espirito Santo with great anticipation.  They welcomed us with open arms.  We again taught English (Tina and Donnell came alive at this.  Cassie shared her testimony and Eric and I gave the message together.  It flowed wonderfully!  The challenge was for them to get into their Bibles and have daily devotions and weekly home fellowship meetings.  I asked all who would be serious at this to meet me in the morning (this morning) at 8 AM.  The room filled and we handed out 14 Bibles (we ran out or would have handed out more!) plus materials for personal study, evangelism tracks, and group study materials -- all in Portuguese that I  found a couple months ago that the missionaries whole heartedly welcomed!  THEN we had a baptismal service in the river.  Ben told me that he was ready for Baptism on Monday and it was a beach side filled with spectators as Ben was baptized!

Well, I'd better go before this this site crashes again!  God is with us and I can't wait for you to hear the miracles and the God-incidences that we are all experiencing.  Tomorrow begins the Children's Camp and Youth Rallies and Sunday worship services!  Pray for all of us during this and we will pray for you, too.

We love you and are praying for you, too!  Tell Randy Agin that we had a special time of prayer for
him this afternoon.  Also ask me about the baby with the turned in feet and the teams response!
God is good!  God bless you all and PLEASE hold down the fort in our absence!
 In His love and service,

- Pastor Steve

LIVE Update 7: Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Summary for Monday - We are all together now, we are ready for Your work Lord...

15:31, June 09, 2008Update Praise:  We are ALL together!  We just arrived from Belem and are fully connected as a team.  The Tam  8 are out buying Redes (hammocks0 and Zeke), some of the missionaries and I are back at the guest house awaiting the pickup for our trip to Victoria and then up river to Porto de Moz!  We will be on the river from this point ALL WEEK!  Don’t expect any communication before Friday (and maybe not then because in PdM – the connections are always iffy at best).  We had a great morning at the fish market and bazaar downtown.  Several opportunities for street evangelism and ALL of our luggage and totes made it through.

Your prayers are working and here are a couple of prayer needs:  Eric ankles are swelling due to too much salt in the foods, I have blister on my big toe, Tracey is struggling with some sinus issues, Ben is recovering from flu/cold or whatever but had some great prayer last night, Ervando said the last two days were the best two days of his life and said goodbye practically in tears and now pray for the villages we are to visit – especially Espirit de Santo!!!

Please hold our church family back home in your prayers, too.  Step up to the bat and believe for miracles in Licking County, too!  We are a team on both sides of the equator.  I hear that it is as hot up there as it is here --- man!  If you want to see our experience thus far, just ask Randy – he’s has video taped EVERYTHING!

We love you all and all is well!  Jesus Christ is Lord.

LIVE Update 6: Sunday, June 09, 2008

Summary for Sunday - Everything is going in the right direction...

17:34, June 08, 2008We had devotions this morning (led by Eric and he did a nice job.  He led us to doing some Kingdom praying for each other and we then went up to the every Sunday craft open market.  It was like a huge carnival including a parade.  We did street evangelism, saw beggars (blind and otherwise), and learned that Brazilians love to party.  The team had many good experiences.  Ervando traveled with us today and we had plenty of opportunities to try to reach out to him.  We went to lunch at the Churrasqueiria (Brazilian BBQ) again since Donnell and Ben missed it yesterday.  We came back to rest, swim, relax.  We will have a worship service together after while (around 7:30 or 8:00).  Tomorrow we will be heading back to Altamira in the afternoon.  All is well and the team is in good shape and ready to roll.

I guess that's all for now.  Hope you had great worship this morning!  We prayed for you!

LIVE Update 5: Sunday, June 08, 2008

Late, last night 10:40PM - A charming, laid back night with surprises...

22:30, June 07, 2008 - I know, another one in the same day!  Well, I have internet and may not have it much next two weeks and today ended powerfully!  We relaxed, shopped and ate at a modern mall, some of us went to a Zoo/Aquarium (though Aquarium was closed) and saw all that a rainforest contains (was great) and then we walked down to the pier and saw Belem’s brighter side.  We then ate a Brazilian BBQ – man what a smorgasbord!!!  We ended the day with devotions on the front steps of our hotel (Zoghabe Apart hotel).  We sang, read 1 Corinthians 13 from Message Bible and then just openly shared with each other everything that God has done ALREADY to show us that He has everything under control.  Great  sharing and then Richie (head missionary who is with us) began to share the expectancy he has for a fresh love for the Brazilian people.  It was then that a poor beggar lady named Saundra approached asking for help.  She had been on the street for 8 days and was out collecting pop cans to raise enough money to appease her daughter to let her sleep in her house.  We talked with her, prayed with her, introduced her to Jesus and did some counseling with her.  She was so tiny and frail.  She had had 3 husbands who are all now deceased.  She bowed her head and asked Jesus into her heart.  We talked some more and asked Christ to give her answers we couldn’t provide.  We gave her enough money to be able to go to her daughters for the next couple of weeks (paying her own way).  Tears flowed as she hugged every team member and Richie.  I had just told the team to be ready to do some street ministry tomorrow morning and to be ready because God was going to surprise us with opportunities!

God is so good.  This team is pumped and ready to go.  Ben had had a word of knowledge regarding someone’s feet.  Tina identified that it was her.  He prayed, others laid on hands, I prayed – we waited, I watched – suddenly I felt God’s presence flowing.  I sensed that Tina was releasing a lot of fear and anxiety and relaxing for the first time.  I asked her if she felt anything and I sure wish I could remember her response because she expressed a wonderful overflowing presence of peace and joy.  Pat Berger’s prayers for Marcie the last couple of days, according to Marcie, were prophetic in helping her face the trials of the flights.  We got word from Zeke that he went spear fishing with Clyde.  I’ll let Zeke tell you the rest in his quiet descriptive terms!

Ready for bed and excited for tomorrow!

Love to all,

- Pastor Steve

LIVE Update 4: Saturday, June 07, 2008

9:45AM - Taking it one day at a time - God is in control...

Hi, I think this is #4 but losing count!  The “Brazil 8” made it safely to Belem and Richie and I beat them by 4 hours.  We are all safe in the Zogabe Apart Hotel in Belem.  You can reach them through Sunday night by writing to me at srpastor@vineyardlc.com or posting a note on the Brazil link to our web site.  Don’t send many emails to me because I’m not in a safe zone and make sure you put in the subject line “NOTE FROM OHIO” in all caps and I can spot it among the hundreds that are getting through that are spam.  I’m not used to this with the safety of our fire walls back home.

Pray for Ervando, a man I met last year in Belem.  Richie and I met with him this morning for a couple hours and he is going to join us as we see Belem.  He may be the reason God has sidetracked us – that and the fact that the team is getting a chance to adjust to the Brazilian life before hitting the river and the mission (plus resting up).  Please pass the word that we everyone is safe and doing great.  Zeke is not with us but is still in Altamira experiencing the mission.  He has internet access from the mission base (at times).

We will shop and take in Belem and do was street witnessing today and tomorrow.  The expenses for this “side trip” are unexpected, yes, but we are doing ok and with Richie’s help we’ll be able to recover once we get back home.  I was very disappointed last night but after spending time with Ervando (with Richie’s help) this morning, I know that God is in charge and we just need to take one day at a time.

The team has had “adventures” on every leg of the trip so far but I’ll let them share their experiences (including the failed landing gear answer to prayer, customs experience praise, etc.).  They are pumped.  KEEP PRAYING.  Love you all!

LIVE Update 3: Friday, June 06, 2008

NEW!!  - UPDATED:  4:15PM

16:15, June 06, 2008 - The team (final 8) did not make the connection and were rerouted to Belem through Brasilia and will arrive in Belem at 11 PM.  There are NO FLIGHTS to Altamira until Monday afternoon.  Richie and I are going to fly to Belem and will be there when they arrive.  We will get them to hotels and “hang out” with them until Monday (they will get to see a more civilized side of Brazil).  We will fly back to Altamira on Monday, hook up with Zeke and the missionaries and go to Port Victoria for the boat trip to Porto de Moz.  We will go straight to the River mission for 4 days before we actually land in Porto de Moz and then should get back on schedule.  We will only miss 2 days of our planned itinerary and the team will be well rested from their travels when we begin.

We will have to cover our expenses and our flight insurance should reimburse us once we are back home.  We don’t have enough in the emergency fund for this side trip so Richie (head missionary) is going to put the expenses on his international credit card and we’ll pay him back.  We knew there would be complications and I’m sure the Lord will use us wherever we are in Brazil – so keep praying and believing and all we be fine!!

I talked with Eric in Rio and he said the team was holding up great and Zeke will be spoiled by these missionaries by the time I see him again on Monday!  Thank you for praying and believing with us!

Faithfully yours,

- Pastor Steve

-----------------------------------------
10:11AM - Day 5 for Zeke and I and Day 2 for the rest of the team...

10:11, June 06, 2008 - The team is on their way and are HAVING AN ADVENTURE!!  Zeke and I made it great (after the complications) and have just returned from the Missionary Care retreat!!  God blessed the retreat and we connected well and God allowed some healing and rejuvenation – we’re now ready for the team and the mission!  Zeke awoke before dawn (we’re sleeping in hammocks outside) to the rustling of hundreds of monkeys playing in the trees.  He didn’t know what he was listening to!

The team found themselves with all their stuff behind a long line at Columbus airport.  They paused to pray and were led to a guy who took their luggage and passports and smoothly passed them through the whole process in about 15 minutes – first answered prayer for them.   When the Delta flight got to New York, the plane flew past the airport and circled out over the ocean.  Everyone knew something was wrong.  The landing gear malfunctioned and they worked on it to get it going and then had to test it (while in the air) and then informed the passengers so that they wouldn’t be freaked when they landed alongside all the fire trucks on the runway.  They landed without incident and are safe.  It is now 10:58 here and there is no word from the team going through customs and making their flight on to Belem (then later to Altamira soo-o—o-o-o-o no news is great news – they probably made the connection which is another major answer to prayer ….I hope!  Keep praying.

Obviously, God has some great plans for us for the adversary to try to destroy the mission before it could even get started!  Thank you for continually praying.  Pass this around, especially to those who don’t do the net because I know Denny and Gwen are doing a great job in keeping it up to date!  We love you all and covet your prayers.  Thank you for joining us in this mission on your knees!

I’ll let you know as soon as the team arrives and if you need to get a message to Zeke or I, either email me or tell Carole and she will call us.  Expect delays in being able to connect or get messages through.  Hold down the fort.

Love you all!

Pastor Steve

PS – give Carole a hug for me.  She’s been great getting BOTH parts of our group off and running!

LIVE Update 2: Tuesday, June 03, 2008

3:56PM - First Update from Pastor Steve and Zeke...

Zeke and I are in Brasilia (Capital) due to a major concern in Rio.  We landed in Rio at 8:30 and our flight to Belem was to leave at 9:15 and we had to go through customs.  Obviously, we didn’t make it and the plane left without us!  All other flights were filled from Belem to Altamira for the next two days and we were going to have to stay in Rio or Belem (when we did get there) for two days – meaning that we would completely miss the retreat that I’m supposed to be leading!  The next major part of the concern is that the rest of the team has the EXACT same schedule as Zeke and I when they come on Thursday and there are 8 of them!

It is vital that there schedule be changed before they leave the states!  As for Zeke and I, I turned to Zeke at the desk and told him it was time to pray.  I asked the Lord to give us favor with Tam airlines.  He connected us with a lady who could speak English (her name is Nina – surprisingly – and I’ll explain that later as to the coincidence).  She helped me call Altamira and Dee Bergen explained that we were in major concern because Tam does not go to bat or help you through these kinds of problems and were still uncooperative in getting Angie (one of the missionaries here) her lost luggage.  She said she would make calls and see what she could do.  Long story – too long.  Bottom line is Nina went to bat for us rerouted us through Brasilia and then Manaus then to Altamira and we will be thee at 10:30 in the morning.  She then booked us to be at this hotel to get some rest before our flight to Manaus.  She also has booked us a hotel in Manaus and gave us a dinner voucher at the hotel!

According to Dee this is a miracle for in all her years in Brazil, she’s never seen this!  Friends, God answer prayer and this confirms to me that He has some wonderful things planned for this mission!!!!

Please pray for the team as they travel to meet us.  They leave Thursday.  Tam will not do the same with them, I’m told – but you never know what God can or will do!  It would be much better for them to change their flights before they leave the states.  Must go, but obviously your prayers are working!  Love and miss you all!

All for the King!
